NEC Big Bang for Izzy

Update:  Producer of BBC Radio 4's Material World, Michella Martin, has arranged for Ludlow College's Izzy Thomlinson to conduct her experiment at the Big Bang Science Fair at the NEC on 15th and 16th March.

Izzy Thomlinson an A level student taking: Physics, Chemistry, Maths and French - and with an offer to study Chemistry at Oxford, has been selected as one of four finalists in the national Amateur Scientist of the Year competition - "So you want to be a Scientist" sponsored by Radio 4's Material World.

Izzy heard about the competition last year and was interested in other people's ideas and decided to submit her own this year.  Izzy is interested in unpleasant noises - for example - finger nails scratching down a blackboard.  She will conduct an experiment to find out why some people's reactions to unpleasant noises vary and why some find some noises more unpleasant than others.

She will present her findings in June at the Cheltenham Science Festival.

Izzy talked about her ideas to her science mentor Professor Trevor Cox on Radio 4's Material World at 4.30 pm on Thursday 12th January.
