LUDLOW COLLEGE INTRODUCES SCHOLARSHIPS FOR A LEVEL STUDENTS

The Foundation of Ludlow College will be awarding 5 scholarships to A level students, intending to progress to university in 2014 or 2015, and enrolling at Ludlow College for September 2012.

Each student will receive £2,000 per annum towards their university educational costs, during the period of their undergraduate studies, for up to a maximum of four years (i.e. a total of £6,000 for those on a three year degree course and £8,000 for those on a four year degree course).  This funding will commence in September/October 2014 or in 2015 if the student wishes to take a gap year.

The criteria for selection for the awards will include not only academic achievement but also leadership potential and financial need.  Applications will need to be sent in before March 31, 2012, and interviews will take place at the College in April 2012.

Michael Hogan, Chairman of the Foundation, said, "This is a very exciting and innovative new programme that will bring tomorrow's leaders to Ludlow College.  In some instances it may also provide financial help to families who due to the new fee structures and current economic climate might feel deterred from encouraging their children to seek a university education".

Philip Dunne, MP, said, “I am delighted to support this ground –breaking initiative by the Foundation to establish a scholarship scheme for Ludlow College students seeking help with tuition fees at University. I was encouraged to learn last month that school leavers do not seem to have been put off applying to Universities for the first academic year of the new fee system. While under the new scheme no-one will have to pay anything up front, and graduates will not start paying for their education until they earn over £21,000, for some the idea of repaying a student loan is still a concern.  So this new scholarship scheme for Ludlow College will act as a positive incentive to encourage local students to pursue their studies and move on to higher education.”

Jonathan Davis, Principal of Ludlow College, said, ‘"This is part of a wide range of developments at Ludlow College designed to raise standards. We have already spoken to parents and prospective students at our Open Evenings about their concerns vis-à-vis university options and rising costs, and we feel this is a wonderful chance for students from both the local community and further a field to have a chance to progress in a highly competitive market place.  We are aiming to make Ludlow College the first choice in the South Shropshire and Marches area. Our commitment has also involved our £750,000 investment in the College’s new state of the art facilities. Work on the Science block refurbishment, at a cost of £285,000, is due to be completed at Easter.”

Ludlow College is unique in that it is one of the oldest and smallest educational institutions in the country.  In the last academic year our students achieved a 98.7% pass rate in their exams, which places the College in the top 25% of Sixth Form College’s nationally.
