What are Apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships have been developed in conjunction with employers as a means of training and developing people in the career of their choice. They provide the foundation on which to develop a range of options for the future. They can also be used as a stepping-stone to further or higher education.
Apprenticeships operate at three levels:
- Intermediate (Level 2)
- Advanced (Level 3)
- Higher (Level 4)
Apprenticeships Standards includes the following:
- A practical diploma at the appropriate level (included in some Standards)

How will the training take place?
The majority of training will take place in the workplace. Apprentices may be required to attend college either as day-release or sometimes as block release, depending on the occupational area selected. Assessment will often be carried out by completing tasks in the workplace. If you require Maths and English training the sessions will take place at college and will be arranged by your assessor.
Benefits to the Apprentice
An obvious benefit is the opportunity to earn while learning but, more importantly, an apprenticeship develops skills for a successful career.
Benefits to the Employer
Employers gain by being able to train people to meet the needs of the business. An apprentice’s enthusiasm can bring positive benefits to other members of staff and the knowledge they gain is frequently used to the benefit of the business.
